چکیده

BACKGROUND Mining and smelting activities affect the biophysical environment and human health. OBJECTIVE This paper elucidates on the human health status of residents close to a nickel-copper mine and concentrator/smelter plant. METHOD 600 questionnaires were administered and data generated was processed. RESULTS Health complaints of respondents included palpitations, lower abdominal pain, shortness of breath, constant chest pains, unusual spitting, coughing regularly, frequent headaches, loss of body weight, regular constipation, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, urinary pain, and unusual genital discharge. Many respondents suffered from headaches frequently with >50% from five sites. The majority of respondents having frequent influenza/common colds were from three sites. Pracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen were taken for headache, period, back and abdominal pain. Fumes, vibrations, noise and constant movement of heavy equipment were considered as disturbing factors affecting health. CONCLUSION Fumes of SO(2) emanating from mining and smelting were the most suspected causative agent affecting health. Control site values for fumes, dust, vibrations and noise were very low. A link between health status and environmental pollution due to mining activities was thus inferred.

Effect of grinding time on flotation recovery of copper smelting slags in Bardaskan district

Copper smelting slags are hard materials. Therefore,to recover their copper by flotation method, grinding should be carried out to obtain optimal particle size. Copper smelting slags in the Bardeskan district, with work index of 16.24 kwh/st, were grinded for 65 minutes to reach an acceptable degree of freedom for the flotation tests, with particle size of 80%, smaller than 70 μm. With this gri...

Application of Phytoremediation to Reduce Environmental Pollution of Copper Smelting and Refinery Factories: a Review

Copper smelting and refinery factories are the final stages of a pyrometallurgical processing chain, and they cause many environmental challenges around the world. One of the most common environmental problems of these factories is toxic emissions. These toxic gases have harmful effects on the vegetation, animal species, soils, and water resources around the factories. Phytoremediation can play...

Heavy metal pollution induced by a ferro-nickel smelting plant in Greece.

Seven heavy metals, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni and Zn, were measured in marine sediments, plants and invertebrates in the vicinity of a ferro-nickel smelting plant in Greece. The concentrations of metals in the sediment were higher than those found in the average unpolluted Greek coastal sediment. High levels of metals were observed in the gastropod molluscs, particularly Cerithium vulgatum, which ...

Temporal Trends in Metal Pollution: Using Bird Excrement as Indicator

Past mining and smelting activities have resulted in metal polluted environments all over the world, but long-term monitoring data is often scarce, especially in higher trophic levels. In this study we used bird (Parus major and Ficedula hypoleuca) excrement to monitor metal pollution in the terrestrial environment following 16 years of continuously reduced emissions from a copper/nickel smelte...
